3. The original owner was also the proprietor of various hotels, a railway and the famous local casino.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT ESTORIL
1. The name “Estoril” is thought to have originated from either the old Portuguese word for heather (“estorga”) or that for the northern goshawk (“astor”), both of which are abundant in the area.
2. Its many fortifications were built to protect it from countless attacks by pirates and privateers.
3. It became a hive of espionage and diplomacy in neutral Portugal during WWII, before turning into a playground for the rich and famous after the war was over.
4. The “Casino Estoril” saw much of the spying and was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s “Casino Royale”.
5. Estoril hosts a major tennis event, and was the home of the Portuguese grand prix until 1996.
