FIVE FACTS ABOUT BOAVISTA FC
1. Boavista was founded in 1903 by two English brothers, who were sent a football by their father. The British contingent of the club were soon sent packing, however, when they refused to play on Sundays.
2. Their first period of sustained success came in the 1970s, when they claimed three Portuguese cups in five years, with the third being won under an English boss, Jimmy Hagan.
3. The second set of glory years came around the turn of the millennium as they joined the exclusive group of just 5 teams to have won the Portuguese league title in 2001.
4. A couple of years later, they narrowly missed out on a historic Derby da Invicta (Derby of the Undefeated) UEFA Cup final against city rivals Porto, losing to Celtic in their semi.
5. In 2008, Boavista were kicked out of the top flight as a result of the Apita Dourada (Golden Whistle) matchfixing scandal, but they were reinstated in 2014.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT PORTO’S CULTURE
1. Porto’s historic centre has been on the UNESCO list since 1996, with the cathedral and stock exchange (Palácio da Bolsa) two of its major highlights.
2. If books and coffee in the midst of art deco are your thing, the “Livraria Lello” and “Cafe Majestic” should not be missed. Even the McDonald’s (Imperial) is housed in an exquisite building.
3. Impressive azulejos (ceramic tilework) can be found in both the cathedral and train station, as well as the far more contemporary Casa da Música, a modern architectural masterpiece.
4. Port wine is, quite literally, synonymous with the city. The fortified wine, countless cellars of which lie across the river from the historic centre, played a major role in Porto’s development.
5. In terms of food, the hearty “Francesinha” (a beer, cheese, steak and sausage sandwich) is the signature dish.
