FIVE FACTS ABOUT MARÍTIMO CS
1. The club’s seafaring name was chosen as many of their original players also worked on the docks.
2. They won a “Campeonato de Portugal” in 1926, which remains their only major triumph to this day.
3. Marítimo, as all other clubs not located on the mainland, were excluded from league competition until 1973, during which time they amassed a record 35 Madeira championships.
4. Marítimo enjoy substantial overseas support from fan groups in Brazil, Cape Verde and Angola, which all were once Portuguese colonies.
5. They have featured in European competition on various occasions, reaching the last 32 of the UEFA Cup in 1994/1995, where they lost to Juventus.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT FUNCHAL’S HISTORY
1. Funchal takes its name from the wild fennel (“funcho”) that grew all over it upon discovery.
2. Its fertile soil and strategic location caused the town to grow rapidly in the 15th century, with Christopher Columbus one of its early residents.
3. From the 16th century, it became an important port of call for ships making the long journey between Asia and the Americas.
4. While its location was excellent for trade, it also meant it was vulnerable to sackings by enemy fleets and pirates, from which it was often forced to defend itself.
5. Today, with a fully established port and airport, it is a hugely popular tourist destination.
