HISTORY AND FORMAT
Read
Although the foundation of the Premier League in 1992 marked a watershed moment in the development of English top-flight football and the beginning of its global proliferation, its roots go all the way back to 1888, making it the oldest league in the world.
This mix of long tradition with the cream of international managers and players in what remains a relatively unpredictable and fast-paced league has won over a global audience, with billions tuning in to coverage of its matches from every corner of the world.
The Premier League is currently ranked the best in Europe on UEFA coefficient. The bottom three are automatically relegated to the Championship.
Historically, the most successful team in the top division are Manchester United with 20 titles, although they have fallen on hard times of late in their search for a worthy successor to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have filled that gap, claiming their fourth crown in a row last season by pipping Arsenal to the post.
United did, however, claim victory over City in the FA Cup final, snatching a European spot from Newcastle in the process..
Liverpool claimed a record tenth League Cup as they bid farewell to Jürgen Klopp
The record goalgetter in English top flight history is Jimmy Greaves with 357 goals.
