FIVE FACTS ABOUT SL BENFICA
1. Benfica began life as the all-Portuguese “Sport Lisboa” following a meeting in a pharmacy in 1904.
2. They burst onto the European stage in the early 1960s, claiming two consecutive European Cup final victories against the two Spanish giants in 1961 (Barcelona) and 1962 (Real Madrid).
3. Club legend and record goalscorer Eusébio was on target in the second of those finals as he began his much-decorated 14 year stay at the Estádio da Luz.
4. Holding a record number of Portuguese titles, Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga, they are the second most supported side in the world after Bayern Munich.
5. The club mascot is a real-life eagle called Vitória, who lives in the stadium and lands on the club crest just before every home game.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT LISBON´S HISTORY
1. Legend attributes the founding of Lisbon to the Greek hero, Odysseus. Julius Caesar later turned it into the Roman city of Felicitas Julia Olisipo.
2. It was a Muslim city from 711 to 1147, during which time the oldest district, Alfama (deriving from the Arabic for “hot bath”), was formed.
3. After becoming the capital of Portugal in 1255, Lisbon became the port of departure for many famous voyages during the Age of Discovery, including that of Vasco Da Gama.
4. The devastating 1755 Lisbon Earthquake and subsequent tsunami left Europe in shock, initiated the study of seismology and inspired Voltaire´s most famous work, “Candide”.
5. Lisbon was the setting for the Carnation Revolution of 1974, which overthrew the authoritarian dictatorship of “Estado Novo”, introduced the Third Republic and ended colonialism.
