FIVE FACTS ABOUT DESPORTIVO DAS AVES
1. The club changed its original name of “Onze Vermelhos das Aves” (11 Aves Reds) to “Clube Desportivo das Aves” due to perceived communist connotations.
2. They reached the top flight for the first time in 1985 after winning the second division.
3. The club’s finest hour was a remarkable 2-1 victory over Sporting in the 2018 Taça de Portugal final to claim their first and only piece of major silverware.
4. Things went quickly downhill, as the pandemic left the club with debts it could not pay. It was reborn as “CD Aves 1930”, but had to begin from the very bottom of the Portuguese pyramid.
5. With the route back to the top looking tough, Vila das Aves persuaded Vilafranquense’s side to relocate north from the Lisbon area, claiming their second tier spot for a brand new side, “AVS”.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT VILA DAS AVES
1. Also known simply as “Aves”, the origin of the name is believed to derive from the Celtic term for water, not the Portuguese word for birds (“aves”).
2. It is situated at the confluence of the Ave and Vizela rivers.
3. The opening of a huge spinning and fabric factory in the mid-19th century prompted a dramatic surge in the local population.
4. In recent years, the clothing industry has come to the fore, with many large companies active here.
5. CD Aves’ historic rivals, Tirsense, are based in the much larger neighbouring city of Santo Tirso.
