FIVE FACTS ABOUT CASA PIA AC
1. Although Casa Pia AC was founded in 1920, Casapianos were active on the Portuguese football scene much earlier as “Real Casa Pia de Lisboa”, established in 1893.
2. It was this side that defeated the “invincible” Carcavelos, a team comprised of British undersea cable workers based in Cascais, in 1898.
3. Casa Pia only participated in one season of top flight football in the 20th century, losing 13 out of 14 games to finish last in 1938/1939.
4. It took them a remarkable 83 years to return to the highest level, doing so as runners up in the second division in 2022.
5. As their stadium does not meet the minimum requirements for Primeira Liga football, Casa Pia are currently playing their home games at Estádio Municipal de Rio Maior, 40km north of Lisbon.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT CASA PIA
1. Casa Pia (Pious House) was created in the 18th century at the behest of Maria I (known as both “the Pious” and “the Mad”) to house and educate children in need.
2. The man charged with the task of setting up the organisation was Pina Manique, after whom Casa Pia AC’s historic stadium is named.
3. It was Casapianos (the name used to describe those having attended one of the institutes) who set up Portugal’s biggest club, Benfica, as well as the smaller Vitória de Setúbal.
4. Originally based exclusively in the “Castelo de São Jorge” (Castle of St. George), it is now spread across ten different locations.
5. The institution was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal in the early 21st century, as allegations spanning decades resulted in the conviction of various public figures and Casa Pia workers.
