1. Portimonense began life in a shoe repair shop in 1914, the brainchild of a local lad who had studied in England.
2. Success arrived on a local level for the first time in 1937, as Portimonense were crowned champions of the Algarve.
3. It took until 1977, however, for a place in the top flight to be attained.
4. The 1980s were the club’s golden years, as they reached three cup semi-finals and achieved a best-ever league finish of 5th, putting them into Europe for the first and only time.
5. They have played in the Primeira Liga since their most recent promotion in 2017, avoiding relegation in 2020 despite finishing in 17th due to Vitoría de Setubal’s disqualification from the next campaign.

1. The Carthiginians founded the settlement of Porto Magonis in the 6th century BC in what is now the centre of Portimão.
2. In the Middle Ages, it developed into a shipbuilding port, which also exported fish, wine, olives and oil.
3. The Fort of Santa Catarina, which still stands today, was constructed in the 17th century to protect the town from sea attacks from pirates.
4. Tourism began to grow from the start of the 20th century thanks to its warm sandy beaches.
