1. GD Chaves was formed when rivals AC Flaviense and Flávia SC joined forces in 1949.
2. The 1980s were a golden age for the club, when top ten league finishes were a regular occurrence.
3. They achieved their only European qualification in this period, reaching the UEFA Cup second round.
4. Chaves’ stadium bore witness to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2003 debut for Portugal against Kazakhstan.
5. 2010 was a mixed year for the Flavians, who reached their first Taça de Portugal final, only to lose to Porto 2-1 and suffer the extra indignity of relegation.

1. Chaves (“keys” in Portuguese) first rose to prominence in Roman times as “Aquae Flaviae” (Flavian Waters), when it was granted the status of municipality by Vespasian.
2. Just ten kilometres from the modern Spanish region of Galicia to the north, it is situated at the meeting point of three important Roman roads.
3. Its proximity to Spain and strategic importance prompted the “Poet King”, Denis I, to complete construction of its medieval castle, the keep of which remains standing to this day.
4. Chaves is best-known for its medicinal hot springs, which contain the hottest such waters in Europe.
5. Nadir Afonso, a pioneer of the kinetic art movement best-known for his “Cities” series, was born and raised in Chaves.
