FIVE FACTS ABOUT SC FARENSE
1. The oldest football club in the Algarve, it was founded by five brothers, the oldest of whom was a fan of Lisbon’s Sporting, hence the name “Sporting Clube de Farense”.
2. Farense were hoping to play in the the same colours as the other Sporting, but they only had a black and white photo of the capital outfit, meaning they opted for the wrong combination.
3. The Lions’ best domestic result was reaching the Portuguese cup final in 1990, where they lost to Estrela de Amadora in a replay.
4. A record fifth place finish five years later meant they met Lyon in their only European fixtures to date. The matches ended in respectable 1-0 home and away defeats to the French giants.
5. Their biggest rivals are fellow Algarve sides, Olhanense and Portimonense.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT FARO
1. Faro is the southernmost city of mainland Portugal, with over 60,000 residents.
2. It began life as Ossonoba, a Phoenician colony trading in fish and minerals.
3. The city’s Byzantine walls, which were constructed a millennium and a half ago, still stand today.
4. Faro lies on the Ria Formosa, a lagoon famed for its birds, beaches and bars.
5. The lagoon protected it from the 1755 tsunami, causing it to become the Algarve’s capital.
