FIVE FACTS ABOUT FC AROUCA
1. FC Arouca began life as the 40th subsidiary of the much larger FC Porto in 1951.
2. They were briefly coached by TV personality, Jorge Gabriel, who presented the Portuguese version of “Who wants to be a millionaire?”.
3. From fifth tier football in 2007, Arouca won a flurry of promotions to reach the Primeira Liga for the first time in 2013.
4. The municipality put their hands in their pocket to celebrate and increased the capacity of the local stadium from a tiny 1,500 to 5,000 seats.
5. Angolan legend Lito Vidigal led them into continental competition thanks to a best-ever finish of 5th in 2016, but they fell to Olympiacos in the Europa League playoff round.

1. Arouca developed around its famous monastery, which began life in the 10th century.
2. Saint Mafalda, daughter of the king, was its most famous occupant after becoming a nun.
3. The presence of tungsten in the hills attracted foreign investment up until the 1960s.
4. Today, the whole area is designated a geopark due to its geological richness and diversity.
5. The centrepiece is the world’s largest pedestrian suspension bridge, “Arouca 516”, completed in 2021.
