FIVE FACTS ABOUT SPORTING CP
1. The funds and the land to form the club were provided by the Viscount of Alvalade, who wished to encouraged his grandson, José (after whom the stadium is named), in his “sporting” pursuits.
2. Sporting´s greatest legend and record scorer, Fernando Peyroteo, netted a preposterous 544 goals in his 334 appearances between 1937 and 1949.
3. Their only European title won thus far was the Cup Winners Cup of 1964. This included a remarkable comeback from a 4-1 loss at Old Trafford, as the Lions beat Manchester United 5-0 in the return leg.
4. In the 2002/2003 season, Cristiano Ronaldo became the only player to be promoted from the club’s U16 side, via the U17, U18, and B side all the way to the first team in a single season.
5. Although their matches against the Dragons of Porto are also considered derbies, Sporting’s main rivalry is the “Eternal Derby” against fellow Lisbon outfit, Benfica.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT LISBON’S CULTURE
1. Two of Lisbon’s most popular museums are unusually dedicated to tiles and historic coaches.
2. The “Calçada Portuguesa” style of mosaic pavement, which covers much of the city, originated here.
3. Fado (“fate”) music began in Lisbon’s Alfama district, a sad and nostalgic genre describing the separation of sailors from their homeland.
4. As a seafaring city, its cuisine is unsurprisingly based on fish and seafood, with “bacalhau” (cod) appearing in a vast array of local dishes.
5. As well as footballing legend Luis Figo, UN Secretary-General António Guterres also hails from Lisbon.
