FIVE FACTS ABOUT GIL VICENTE
1. Gil Vicente are named after the eponymous “father of Portuguese drama”, who locals believe was born in Barcelos, a claim contested by nearby Guimarães, who claim him as their own.
2. It was on a pitch next to the “Gil Vicente” theatre that the founders of the club started playing football.
3. The Roosters didn’t reach the top flight of Portuguese football until 1990.
4. The “Mateus Affair” cast a shadow over the club in 2006 when the Angolan forward was deemed to have played whilst ineligible causing Gil Vicente to lose their place in the Primeira Liga as punishment.
5. 13 years later, the initial verdict was overturned and the club’s top flight status reinstated.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT BARCELOS
1. Originally a Roman settlement, Barcelos’ famous medieval bridge (see below) was constructed in the 14th century.
2. It is the home of “figurado” ceramics, figurines of people and animals with musical instruments. Many examples can be viewed in the local museum and purchased in the market.
3. Petals carpet the city in the annual “Batalha das Flores” (Battle of the Flowers).
4. Barcelos is best known for its famous rooster, which came back from the dead on a judge’s dinner plate to prove a pilgrim’s innocence and rescue him from hanging.
5. The Barcelos Rooster is not only a symbol of the whole Portuguese nation, but has also been adopted in the logo of the famous South African restaurant chain, Nando’s.
