FIVE FACTS ABOUT VILA DO CONDE
1. Although settlement of the area dates back to the Bronze Age, Vila do Conde really rose to prominence in the 16th century when the king passed through it on his way to Santiago de Compostela.
2. This occurred during the Age of Discovery, when many locals were involved in the exploration of India. Two of Vasco da Gama’s crew members were from the town.
3. A replica of a carrack (a boat used during the period) can be visited in the town’s harbour.
4. The 999 arches (some of them now fallen) of the 18th century Santa Clara Aqueduct form the second largest example in the country.
5. In the summer months, notable film, artisanal, agricultural and food festivals are all held here.
