1. Luton were the first team in the south of England to turn professional, doing so in 1891.
2. The Hatters’ heyday was in the late 1980s, when they acheived their best ever top flight finish of seventh and defeated Arsenal 3-2 to claim the 1988 League Cup, their only major silverware to date.
3. Hard times were to follow, as Luton dropped all the way to non-league football in 2009, where they remained for five years.
4. However, with their playoff victory in 2023 over Coventry, they became the first side in English football history to manage to return to the top division from the fifth tier.
5. Luton’s biggest rivals are nearby Watford.

1. The history of Luton dates back to the 6th century, when it was known as Lygetun, meaning “Town on the River Lea”.
2. Luton is synonymous with hatmaking, a practice that began in the 17th century and gave the football club its nickname of “The Hatters”.
3. In the early 20th century, Vauxhall opened what was the largest car factory at the time in the town. It closed down in the early 21st century.
4. Luton’s May Carnival is the largest one-day event of its kind in the country.
5. Situated not far from the capital, Luton Airport has become a hub for many budget airlines.
