FIVE FACTS ABOUT NEWCASTLE UNITED
1. The club formed in 1892 when Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End joined forces.
2. All the club’s major trophies came prior to 1955, but Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer took them close with two second place league finishes in the 1990s.
3. The hugely unpopular chairman Mike Ashley oversaw a dismal period for the club from 2007 to 2021.
4. This has now come to an end with the controversial takeover by a Saudi consortium, making the Magpies the richest club in the world.
5. Newcastle’s local rivals are Sunderland (Tyne-Wear derby) and Middlesbrough (Tyne-Tees derby).

FIVE FACTS ABOUT NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
1. Known from Roman times as Pons Aelius (Hadrian’s Bridge), the new castle that gave the city its current name was built by the son of William the Conqueror, Robert Curthose, in 1080.
2. The phrase “taking coals to Newcastle”, which means to do something utterly pointless, comes from its history of shipping out coal.
3. The Davy safety lamp and George Stephenson’s “Rocket” are both products of the city.
4. The local dialect is Geordie; people from Newcastle are known as “Geordies”.
5. Famous Geordies include Sting and the lead singer of Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler.
