FIVE FACTS ABOUT SHEFFIELD UNITED
1. Bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday were once known as the “Blades”, but United adopted the steel inspired nickname when their neighbours chose to become the “Owls”.
2. All of the club’s major success, including their four FA Cups, came prior to 1925. As a result, they have never competed in Europe.
3. They have, however, been up and down the leagues and are one of just five teams to have won all four of England’s professional football divisions.
4. Brian Deane scored the Premier League’s inaugural goal representing the Blades.
5. Lifelong fan and former player Chris Wilder took them from League One in 2016 to the Premier League in 2019, but a poor 2020/2021 season saw them return to the Championship.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT SHEFFIELD
1. Sheffield’s name derives from the River Sheaf, which meets the River Don within the city.
2. Historically a centre of cutlery manufacture, it became the “Steel City” during the Industrial Revolution, when stainless steel and “Sheffield Plate” were first created.
3. Today, it is a green centre with the highest number of trees per capita of any European city. Part of it lies in the picturesque Peak District National Park.
4. Sheffield is the home of many important bands, including Pulp and The Arctic Monkeys.
5. It was the backdrop to the film “The Full Monty” and is the hometown of actor Sean Bean.
