FIVE FACTS ABOUT WEST BROMWICH ALBION
1. The bird on the badge is a throstle, which was the original term for a West Brom fan. They were often found in the hawthorn bushes where the stadium was built, hence the stadium name “The Hawthorns”.
2. Their last major trophy was the last of their five FA Cup triumphs in 1968. They have also won the league and league cup once.
3. In the late 1970s, West Brom fielded three excellent black players (Cyrille Regis, Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson), who were nicknamed the “Three Degrees” after the American musical act. This was a landmark moment in the fight against racism in football.
4. Famous supporters include Eric Clapton, Lenny Henry, Frank Skinner, Julie Walters and Goran Ivanisevic.
5. West Brom contest the “Black Country” derby against Wolves, a fellow founder member of the top flight of English football, but their rivalry with Aston Villa has often been more heated.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT WEST BROMWICH
1. The first recorded mention of the town is as the village of “Bromwic” (Broom Village) 1000 years ago. Broom refers to the flower, not the sweeping implement.
2. Thanks to coal and ironstone deposits in the area, the town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Nails, springs and guns were produced here.
3. As an industrial centre, West Bromwich was targeted and badly damaged during the Blitz.
4. Many people moved here from India and the Caribbean in the 1950s and 1960s.
5. The city has a heavy metal heritage; the vocalists of both Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest were born here.
