FIVE FACTS ABOUT MANCHESTER CITY
1. Although FA Cups had been won prior to the 1960s, it was in this decade that major success first came City’s way in the shape of their first league title and the European Cup Winners Cup.
2. Manchester City were playing in the third tier of English football as recently as 1998. They were bought by Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi 10 years later, who brought massive investment with him.
3. They are the only English club to have won all domestic competitions in one year and the only one to have reached 100 points in a season. They have both scored and conceded 100 goals in a year too.
4. The ship on the team’s badge represents the Manchester Ship Canal, which connects the city to the Irish Sea. The team motto is “Superbia in Proelio”, meaning “Pride in Battle”.
5. Manchester City’s main rivals are Manchester United. They were once the “noisy neighbours”, but have been in the ascendancy since Alex Ferguson’s retirement as United boss.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT MANCHESTER’S CULTURE
1. Chetham’s Library was the original meeting place of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The research they conducted here resulted in the creation of the Communist Manifesto.
2. Manchester has produced many of the most famous programmes on British television. BBC and ITV have a major presence in the new “MediaCity UK” building.
3. Canal Street is the focal point of the LGBTQ+ community and hosts the Manchester Pride festival.
4. Manchester is the home of numerous legendary bands including Oasis (famous City fans), The Bee Gees, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and The Chemical Brothers.
5. Other famous Mancunians include Clockwork Orange author Anthony Burgess, Karl Pilkington, Emmeline Pankhurst and Ian McShane, as well as Marcus Rashford.
