FIVE FACTS ABOUT MANCHESTER UNITED
1. The club began life as Newton Heath LYR, a team for railway depot workers, in 1878.
2. Scotsman Matt Busby managed the side from the end of WWII until the end of the ’60s, claiming five league titles, two FA Cups and the first ever European Cup won by an English side. The 1958 Munich Air Disaster, in which eight United players tragically lost their lives, also occurred during his tenure.
3. It was another Scot, Alex Ferguson, who managed to outdo him in his 27 years at the club; his incredible haul was 13 league titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, three European Cups and a Cup Winners Cup.
4. In combination, they helped establish United’s English record of 20 league titles.
5. Originally nicknamed the “Pagans” then the “Busby Babes” after the tragedy in Munich, Busby chose to borrow the more intimidating moniker of the “Red Devils” from the local rugby club.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT MANCHESTER’S HISTORY
1. Manchester began as a Roman fort called Mancunium, from which the name for its denizens, “Mancunians”, derives.
2. A population explosion occurred in the 19th century, as textile production made “Cottonopolis” the world’s first industrialised city.
3. In 1817, St. Peter’s Field was the site of the “Peterloo Massacre”, at which demonstrators protesting for voting reform were charged by the cavalry causing the death of 15 people.
4. In 1917, the first atom was split by Ernest Rutherford at the University of Manchester.
5. Great damage was done to the city centre by the IRA bombing of 1996, which left 200 injured; it has since been totally regenerated.
