FIVE FACTS ABOUT HELLAS VERONA
1. The club was founded by students from Greece, hence the name of “Hellas”.
2. The club emblem is inspired by the Della Scala family, who are synonymous with Verona. The mastiffs on the badge reference Mastino I, the founder of the house.
3. Their biggest derby against city rivals Chievo Verona is known as the “Derby della Scalla”.
4. Hellas’ only scudetto came in 1985 in the first season after a match-fixing scandal was uncovered, meaning referees were appointed at random.
5. Hellas was striker Luca Toni’s 16th and final club; he remains their top scorer in Serie A.

1. The centrepiece of the city is its very well-preserved 1st century amphitheatre, which now hosts operas.
2. Julius Caesar took his holidays in Verona; it was also the birthplace of the Roman poet Catullus.
3. Isotta Nogarola, the first female humanist (best known for her discussion of the equal or unequal sin of Adam and Eve), was also from the city.
4. Juliet’s balcony is a popular tourist attraction. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentlemen of Verona were both set here.
5. Veronese bell-ringing, developed in the 18th century, was the first to allow control of when a bell would sound and thus allow music to be played.
