1. Empoli FC was once called “Dopolavoro Interaziendale Italo Gambaccioni Sezione Calcio”. Unsurprisingly, the name didn’t stick.
2. The stadium is named after Carlo Castellani, once Empoli’s top scorer, who died at the Mauthausen concentration camp.
3. Empoli’s first taste of Serie A came in 1986, when they began the season with a famous win over Inter.
4. Their only taste of Europe ended as soon as it began with a defeat to Zurich in the first round.
5. Empoli are friends with Parma, but contest the Derby dell’Arno against fellow Tuscans Fiorentina.

2. Its name derives from the 8th century castle (“Empolis”) around which the town developed.
