FIVE FACTS ABOUT SPAL FERRARA
1. SPAL, which stands for the “Multisport Society of Art and Labour”, was founded by a Salesian priest in 1907.
2. It briefly changed its name to AC Ferrara during WWII, but subsequently returned to its original name.
3. SPAL’s glory days came in the 1950s and 1960s, when they were Serie A regulars. Fabio Capello began his career here.
4. Paolo Mazza was the club chairman throughout this period and the stadium was renamed in his honour following his passing in 1981.
5. The club has gone bankrupt twice in the 21st century. The second time it merged with another local club, Giacomense.

1. The House of Este is synonymous with Ferrara; Este Castle is the centerpiece of its UNESCO city centre.
2. Their patronage allowed the formation of the School of Ferrara art movement, which flourished from the 14th to the 18th century.
3. Frescobaldi, an influential keyboard composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque, was born here.
4. “Cappellacci di zucca” is the most popular local dish, consisting of ravioli filled with cheese, butternut squash and nutmeg.
5. The oldest horse race in the world (begun in 1279), the “Palio of St George”, is held in the city annually.
