FIVE FACTS ABOUT SPEZIA CALCIO
1. The stadium is named after the first player to score a goal for Spezia, Alberto Picco, who died a heroic death in WWI.
2. Spezia won a shock Italian title in 1944, but it is not recognised as official due to limited participation caused by the ongoing WWII.
3. Spezia were briefly a feeder club for Inter Milan at the beginning of the 21st century. The players they received helped them gain promotion to Serie B.
4. However, a bankruptcy in 2008 sent them all the way back down to Serie D.
5. Spezia’s bitterest rivals are Genoa. A mass brawl involving 3000 supporters broke out during the derby in 1922/1923.

1. It became a key Italian naval base in 1861. The Italian navy sailed out of the city to surrender to the Allies during WWII.
2. La Spezia is known as “The Gateway to Zion” in Hebrew. Jews who survived the concentration camps were sent to Mandatory Palestine from here.
3. Nowadays, it is the gateway to Cinque Terre, five fishing villages that you can only reach by train, boat or on foot from La Spezia.
4. 13 other local villages compete in the biggest sporting event of the year in the area, the Palio del Golfo rowing contest.
5. Fans watch from the Passeggiata Morin, La Spezia’s famous seaside promenade lined with palm trees and floral decorations.
