FIVE FACTS ABOUT CLERMONT FOOT 63
1. Stade Clermontois was once the main club in town; its greatest achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the Coupe de France in 1945/1946.
2. Clermont Foot first made it to the quarter finals of the same cup in 1997, toppling PSG while playing as an amateur side.
3. In 2014, they appointed Helena Costa as manager, the first female to manage a men’s team in the top 2 divisions of Europe’s top five leagues. She quickly resigned, but was replaced by another woman, Corinne Diacre.
4. The 63 in the club name is the number of the department of Puy-de-Dome, where they are based.
5. The figure on horseback on the badge is Vercingetorix, who once defeated Caesar in battle and attempted to unify Gaul against the Romans. He would feature heavily in Asterix comics.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT CLERMONT-FERRAND
1. The city is surrounded by a UNESCO chain of dormant volcanoes, known as the “Chaine de Puys”.
2. Black lava stone from these volcanoes was used to construct the city’s striking Gothic cathedral.
3. The 1095 Council of Clermont resulted in the launching of the First Crusade. However, historians dispute whether “Deus Vult” (God Wills It) was actually shouted by attendees.
4. Clermont is the home of Michelin, the company that curiously combines the sale of tyres with elite restaurant certification.
5. Amélie star Audrey Tautou is also from Clermont-Ferrand.
