FIVE FACTS ABOUT STADE DE REIMS
1. The origins of the club can be traced to a multi-sport club attached to the Pommery champagne house.
2. After WWII, the stadium was named after a hero of the French Resistance, who was tortured to death.
3. All of the club’s success came between 1949 and 1962 including six championships, two cups and two European Cup finals. They would not make it back to Europe until 2020.
4. The 1950s side played “champagne football” and included record scorer Just Fontaine, who netted an incredible 13 goals for France in the 1958 World Cup, a record that still stands.
5. The club logo featured a champagne bottle atop a football until the turn of the century, when it fell foul of new alcohol advertising laws.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT REIMS
1. Reims is named after the Belgic tribe, the Remi, who allied with the Romans during their invasion.
2. The Bishop of Reims christened the first king of France, Clovis, with oil allegedly brought by a dove from heaven.
3. As a result, Reims Cathedral became the coronation site for French kings, who were anointed with the same oil used on Clovis from a special ampulla.
4. The German forces surrendered unconditionally to the Allies in Reims in 1945. A museum now marks the spot.
5. Reims is a major centre of champagne production, with houses such as Krug, Mumm and Veuve Clicquot based here.
