FIVE FACTS ABOUT AJ AUXERRE
1. AJA was founded by Abbot Deschamps, after whom their stadium is named.
2. The club is synonymous with Guy Roux, who managed the side with only two short breaks from 1961 to 2005, including an uninterrupted 36 year stretch. He oversaw over 2,000 matches.
3. It took until 1980 for Auxerre to reach Ligue 1, but since then they have claimed one league title and the Coupe de France four times.
4. The mercurial Eric Cantona spent the first five years of his career turning out for AJA.
5. Auxerre’s biggest local rivalries are with Troyes and fellow Burgundians, Dijon.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT AUXERRE
1. Auxerre began as Autissiodorum, an important stopping point on the Via Agrippa.
2. The “x” in the current name should be pronounced “ss” not “ks”. Monks changed “ss” to “x” in medieval writing without it affecting pronunciation.
3. Auxerre’s abbey was established by the Roman Bishop Saint Germanus (Germain) of Auxerre, who fought with the Britons against the Picts and the Saxons in the 5th century.
4. Saint Germanus also ordained the rather more famous Saint Patrick, who studied in Auxerre before ridding Ireland of snakes and using clovers to discuss the trinity.
5. The town of Chablis, famous for its dry white wine, is located nearby.
