1. A forerunner of LOSC, Olympique Lillois, won the first professional French championship in 1932/1933.
2. The “Mastiffs” nickname comes from Olympique Lillois days, A Parisian journalist compared them to the hounds for their refusal to give up.
3. After joining forces with SC Fives to form LOSC. they won two league titles and five cups in their first eleven seasons.
4. Eden Hazard began his career at Lille before moving to Chelsea with his younger brother, Thorgan, who was playing down the road at Lens.
5. Lens are Lille’s bitter rivals, against whom they contest the “Derby of the North”. Lille are considered a middle class team, whereas Lens are working class.

1. Lille (or “l’isle”), derives from “island”; it was originally founded on one on the Deule River.
