FIVE FACTS ABOUT OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE
1. Marseille’s stadium is called the “Vélodrome” as it originally hosted cycling events.
2. The club motto of “droit au but” (straight at the goal) was first created for the rugby team playing under the OM umbrella.
3. Former president Bernard Tapie led the club to four consecutive league titles and the inaugural Champions League in 1993. They were subsequently stripped of the last of their French titles and relegated for match fixing.
4. Jean-Pierre Papin was the heartbeat of the side from 1986 to 1992, during which time he was the league’s top scorer 5 times and lifted the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player.
5. Invented in the 1990s as a riff on El Clásico, “Le Classique” pits OM against PSG in a north-south heavyweight battle.
FIVE FACTS ABOUT MARSEILLE
1. Marseille was founded by Greek settlers in 600BC as “Massalia”, making it the oldest city in France.
2. The manufacture of “Savon de Marseille”, a hard soap containing seawater and olive oil, began 600 years ago.
3. A series of picturesque “calanques” (narrow inlets) stretches for 20km between Marseille and Cassis.
4. The port is the biggest in France and the Provençal fish stew, “bouillabaisse”, was first made here.
5. Marseille is also the home of the aniseed flavoured “pastis”, with local Paul Ricard the man who brought it to the world.
