FIVE FACTS ABOUT NICE OGC
1. The eagle on the badge and in the nickname references the heraldry of the “House of Savoy”, which once ruled the area.
2. Founded by a Marquis, OGC originally focused on athletics and gymnastics rather than football.
3. Nice’s heyday was in the 1950s, when they won all four of their championships and two of their three Coupes de France.
4. Their third win came in 1997 after an extremely favourable draw, but was followed by five seasons in Ligue 2.
5. Nice’s biggest derby is against Marseille, although Monaco is located much nearer on the Cote d’Azur.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT NICE
1. The city was named after the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, by its original Greek settlers.
2. Garibaldi was a native of Nice and was hugely frustrated when it did not form part of the Italy he helped unify.
3. Coincidentally, both Nice and Garibaldi have had popular biscuits named after them.
4. Nice has served as an inspiration and base for both artists (Chagall, Matisse) and writers (Nietzsche, Chekhov).
5. The “English Promenade” runs along the city’s shoreline. Queen Victoria spent some of her winters here.
