FIVE FACTS ABOUT UD LAS PALMAS
1. UD Las Palmas was formed through a merger of five of the island’s teams to create a squad strong enough to keep local talent that was being lost to the mainland.
2. Things started brilliantly. Consecutive promotions in UD’s first two years of existence fast-tracked the side to the top flight.
3. The club’s golden period came in the late 1960s, when they finished 3rd and then 2nd in the league under the stewardship of Vicente Dauder.
4. The 1970s brought a run to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, where they lost to FC Twente, and the Copa Del Rey final, which ended in defeat to Barcelona.
5. Las Palmas’ main rivals are Tenerife, against whom they contest the Derby of the Canaries.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA
1. Las Palmas is the capital of the island of Gran Canaria and the joint capital of the Canary Islands, which are located off the northwest coast of Africa.

3. The city was founded by Aragonese captain Juan Rejón in 1478 at the beginning of a bloody five year war waged against the local Guanche people, who are now extinct.
4. Residents and visitors alike flock to the “Playa” (Beach) and “Paseo” (Promenade) “de las Canteras” for some rest and relaxation.
