FIVE FACTS ABOUT SV DARMSTADT 98
1. Starting off as Olympia Darmstadt in 1898, the club merged with SC Darmstadt in 1919.
2. The stadium is named after a now non-existent gate to a poplar forest located nearby.
3. It took until the late 1970s for the Lilies to get their first crack at the top flight, but they were immediately relegated.
4. Dirk Schuster took over managerial duties in 2012, leading them to back-to-back promotions from the third division. He then oversaw Darmstadt’s best ever finish of 14th before being snapped up by Augsburg. Without him, Darmstadt went back down again.
5. The Lilies’ biggest rivals are nearby Kickers Offenbach and the mighty Eintracht Frankfurt.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT DARMSTADT
1. Darmstadt is known as Germany’s “Wissenschaftsstadt” (City of Science). An incredible six elements (including darmstadtium) were discovered here, and a further five had their existence confirmed.
2. Merck, the world’s oldest pharmaceutical company, is the city’s largest employer.
3. There is also space for art. The Mathildenhöhe artist colony based in the city was a key centre of the “Jugendstil” (Germany’s “Art Nouveau”) movement.
4. Two Russian empresses were natives of Darmstadt, including the final one, Alexandra Feodorovna, who met an untimely death at the hands of a Bolshevik firing squad.
5. “Frankenstein Castle” overlooks the city, the inspiration behind Mary Shelley’s horror classic.
