PREMIER LEAGUE (HIGHLIGHTS)

Chelsea held on for a 1-1 draw at Anfield this week despite a first half red card for Reece James for a handled goalline clearance. That left top spot open for Spurs, who remain the only side with a 100% record in the division after a 1-0 win over Watford. Rivals Arsenal, meanwhile, are propping up the table with no points and no goals after a 5-0 drubbing from Manchester City. West Ham’s bright start was checked by a Conor Gallagher double for Palace, who came back twice to draw 2-2, and the Seagulls were downed 2-0 at home to Everton. Man U got back to winning ways before Cristiano’s return with a late winner at Wolves, as did the injury-ravaged Foxes at Norwich. Two injury time goals saw Newcastle and Southampton share the spoils, while two early goals saw Villa and Brentford do the same. Burnley got their first point on the board in a battling draw with Leeds.

LA LIGA (HIGHLIGHTS)

Sevilla and Atletico Madrid’s 100% records have both now gone after draws with Elche and Villarreal respectively, Atletico’s coming thanks to a shocking last minute of injury time own goal. That allowed Barca and Real to catch up with them on 7 points thanks to narrow victories over Getafe and Betis, Memphis Depay and Dani Carvajal netting the winners. Valencia also sit on 7 points after a commanding 3-0 victory over Alaves, as do surprise package Mallorca, who saw off Espanyol 1-0. Rayo trounced Granada 4-0 in another shock score, as Osasuna stole all 3 points at Cadiz through two stoppage time goals. Basque heavyweights Athletic and Sociedad edged out Celta and Levante 1-0.

SERIE A (HIGHLIGHTS)

A change of manager has not cured the Old Lady’s ills, as the Bianconeri slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to newly promoted Empoli. Atalanta were slightly improved against Bologna, but were held to 0-0 and dropped points as well. No such issues for the capital clubs as a first-half Immobile hat-trick set Lazio on the way to a 6-1 win over Spezia, while Roma ran in four unanswered in Salernitana with Tammy Abraham scoring on debut. Fellow Premier League import Olivier Giroud netted two as AC Milan cruised to a 4-1 win over Cagliari, while Inter benefited from two goals from debutant Joaquin Correa to win 3-1 at Hellas. Napoli continued their solid albeit unspectacular start with a win at Genoa, while a fantastic Vlahovic header secured victory for La Viola over Torino. Elsewhere, Udinese comfortably dealt with Venezia 3-0 and Sassuolo were held at home by Samp.

BUNDESLIGA (HIGHLIGHTS)

Wolfsburg kept up their impressive 100% start to the campaign with a 1-0 home win over Leipzig, but Bayern are waiting to pounce after a Lewandowski hat-trick helped see off Hertha 5-0. Munich are joined on 7 points by Leverkusen, who were the beneficiaries of more Augsburg self-destruction (two own goals in the first 14 minutes) in their 4-1 win, and Freiburg, who edged the Baden-Wurttemberg derby 3-2. A late Haaland winner saw Dortmund grab the points in another five goal thriller against Hoffenheim, and a late equaliser left the shares spoiled between Arminia and Frankfurt. Elsewhere, Union got their first win of the campaign over the Foals, Koln beat their neighbours Bochum 2-1, and Furth’s dreadful start continued as they lost 3-0 at Mainz.

LIGUE 1 (HIGHLIGHTS)

This week saw another 3 points for PSG courtesy of an Mbappe brace at Reims with Messi coming on for the final quarter. Angers are clinging onto their coattails after a home win over Rennes, but Clermont dropped another couple of points at home to Metz due to a poor goalkeeping blunder. Nice and Marseille, the sides most likely to challenge the capital side for the title in the long run, bounced back from last week’s disgrace to register comfortable home victories over Bordeaux and Saint-Etienne. Lyon, Lille and Monaco finally picked up their first wins with unconvincing victories over Nantes, Montpellier and Troyes, but none of these sides seems capable of mounting a sustained challenge. Elsewhere, Strasbourg defeated Brest 3-1 and Lens and Lorient shared four goals between them in an entertaining match.
