1. It took the Tractor Boys until 1961 to reach the top flight of English football for the first time, doing so under Alf Ramsey, who would go on to lift the World Cup as England boss.
2. Remarkably, they won their one and only league title at the very first attempt the following year.
3. Ipswich’s next purple patch came under another future England manager, Bobby Robson, under whom they claimed their only FA Cup title to date and a UEFA cup.
4. Many of this particular crop of players featured in Sylvester Stallone’s “Escape to Victory”.
5. Their main rivals are Norwich City, against whom they contest the East Anglian derby, also jokingly referred to as the “Old Farm Derby” due to Norfolk and Suffolk’s agrarian heritage.

1. Originally known as “Gipeswic”, Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in the country. The renowned archaeological site Sutton Hoo is located in the vicinity.
2. Its most famous son, Thomas Wolsey, rose to great power under Henry VIII, before falling out of favour for failing to negotiate his divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
3. Under Mary I, the “Ipswich Martyrs” were burnt to death for refusing to renounce Protestantism.
4. A port town, its dock was the most important in the nation in the mid-19th century.
5. The world’s first lawnmower was built here in 1902.
