FIVE FACTS ABOUT UC SAMPDORIA
1. The name Sampdoria is a mix of “Sampierdarenese” and “Andrea Doria”, the two Ligurian sides that merged to form it.
2. The club crest features “Baciccia” (a sailor smoking a pipe) and incorporates the colours of both sides.
3. Samp’s glory days came under the ownership of oil tycoon Paolo Mantovani, who acquired the club in 1979.
4. Before his passing in 1993, a side featuring Pagliuca, Vialli and Mancini delivered 3 Italian cups, a scudetto and a Cup Winner’s Cup. They also reached the European Cup final.
5. Their main rivals are Genoa CFC, with whom they share the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

An older song, the jaunty “Noi Dei Sampdoria Club”

FIVE FACTS ABOUT GENOA’S CULTURE
1. Genoa is the busiest Italian port and one of the busiest in Europe.
2. Described by Chekhov as the most beautiful city he had ever seen, part of the historic centre is on the UNESCO list.
3. The local dialect of “Zeneize” is spoken in the city, although its popularity is waning amongst the youth.
4. Niccolo Paganini, the greatest violinist in history, was a native of Genoa, although it remains unclear as to whether he actually sold his soul to the devil in return for his talent.
5. Genoa is the home of pesto, but not Genovese sauce (which comes from Naples).
