FIVE FACTS ABOUT SSC NAPOLI
1. The original club was founded in 1905 by an English sailor, but was initially barred from competing against Northern Italian teams. They made do with playing ship crews instead.
2. Diego Maradona is akin to a god in Napoli, having brought the city its only two league titles, a Coppa Italia and their only major European title between 1986 and 1990.
3. Napoli retired the No.10 shirt in his honour and renamed their stadium after him following his passing in 2020.
4. The club went bankrupt in 2004 and was relegated to Serie C. Film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis stepped in to rescue the Azzurri and remains the owner to this day.
5. Napoli contest the “Derby of the Sun” or “Derby of the South” with AS Roma, and the “Derby of the 2 Sicilies” with Palermo. Naples was the capital of this historic state.

3. Naples has a strong connection to music, being the origin of the Neapolitan chord, scale and school, as well as opera buffa.
