1. Established in 1893, Genoa are the oldest club side in Italy.
2. CFC stands for “Cricket and Football Club”; the team were founded by Brits with Italians initially barred from joining. The cricketing branch of the club was revived in 2007.
3. The last of their 9 top flight titles arrived in 1924. Perhaps that’s why their nickname is Il Vecchio Balordo (“the old fool”).
4. Englishman William Garbutt became the first professional coach in Italian football after moving to Genoa to work at the docks. He secured their final three championships.
5. They share their stadium with city rivals Sampdoria, against whom they contest the “Derby della Lanterna” (lighthouse).

1. Genoa was a powerful maritime city republic from the 11th to the end of the 18th century, earning nicknames such as “The Superb” and “The Dominant”.
2. Although Genoa adopted the same flag as England (the flag of St. George), the two are not thought to be connected.
3. In the Middle Ages, it accrued numerous colonies including Monaco, Corsica and even the Southern Crimea.
4. As it gradually ceded control of its empire, its focus turned to banking, an area in which it excelled.
5. The city’s most famous sailor was Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus), born in the city in 1451.
