FIVE FACTS ABOUT CAGLIARI CALCIO
1. The club crest incorporates the flag of Sardinia, featuring the bandaged heads of four defeated Moors.
2. Cagliari first reached Serie A in 1964 in club legend Gigi Riva’s first season.
3. Riva stayed at the club for the rest of his career, leading the Rossoblu to their only ever title in 1970. He remains both the club and the Italian national side’s all-time leading scorer.
4. Their greatest European adventure had a distinctly Italian feel; they defeated Juventus before losing to eventual champions Inter in the 1993/1994 UEFA Cup semi-finals.
5. Their traditional rivals from the lower divisions were fellow Sardinians Torres, but their games across the water at Napoli are their current big derbies.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT CAGLIARI
1. Cagliari began life as Karaly, a Phoenician settlement, before being claimed by Carthage and then Rome.
2. The city is overlooked by a series of hills, one featuring the castle of San Michele and another termed the “Devil’s Saddle” for its peculiar shape.
3. Sardinian enjoys official language status alongside Italian in here. The controversial and unfortunately named Bishop Lucifer was the first known Sardinian writer.
4. The Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria (Fair Winds) was given its name as its elevation caused it to smell better than the city below. Argentina’s Buenos Aires is named after it.
5. Due to its harbour location, Cagliari cuisine features more seafood than the rest of the island. Plentiful nearby vineyards provide something to wash it down with.
