2. Previously known as Maleventum (bad wind), it changed its name to Beneventum then Benevento (good wind).
3. Beneventum was the site of the final battle of the Pyrrhic War between Greece and Rome; it ended in a Pyrrhic defeat.
4. The Arch of Trajan is Benevento’s most famous Roman remain. It was built to mark the completion of the Via Traiana connecting the city to the port of Brindisi.
