FIVE FACTS ABOUT SOUTHAMPTON FC
1. The club began life as St. Mary’s Young Men’s Association FC. The connection to St. Mary’s Church is retained to this day in the name of their current stadium and the nickname of the “Saints”.
2. Southampton’s only major silverware to date is the 1976 FA Cup, when they upset Manchester United in the final.
3. Legendary players such as Kevin Keegan, Peter Shilton, Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer (who scored a hat-trick on debut) all played for the Saints in the 1980s.
4. In recent years, it has proved a springboard for great players and managers alike, including Gareth Bale, Mauricio Pochettino, Virgil Van Dijk and Sadio Mane.
5. Portsmouth are Southampton’s biggest rivals and the two contest the South Coast derby. Harry Redknapp is not a popular man here, as he relegated the Saints between two successful stints at Pompey.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT SOUTHAMPTON
1. Southampton has been an important port since the Norman Conquest, when it connected Normandy to the then capital of England, Winchester.
2. It was here that the Black Death arrived in England in 1348, just ten years after the city had been sacked.
3. Southampton was the initial departure port of the Mayflower, which was later forced to dock at Plymouth. The Titanic also began its ill-fated voyage here; 500 Southampton residents perished when it sank.
4. The city boasts the oldest bowling green in the world, dating back to the 13th century.
5. Southampton locals Craig David and Artful Dodger put Southampton on the UK Garage map. Comedian Benny Hill was also from the city and Jane Austen lived here for a time.
